Understanding Automotive Transponder Chip Types

A transponder (transmitter + responder) is a small RFID chip embedded in the key head that communicates with the vehicle's immobilizer ECU. Understanding the types is essential.

ID46 (PCF7936/PCF7941/PCF7945/PCF7953)

Most widely used family. Found in Peugeot, Citroën, Renault, Hyundai, Kia, Honda. Uses Hitag2 crypto.

ID48 (Megamos Crypto)

Primarily in VW Group vehicles (VW, Audi, Škoda, SEAT) and some Fiat models. 96-bit version requires Copy48 token for cloning.

ID49 (Hitag Pro)

Newer generation in Ford, Mazda, Toyota. Uses AES-128 encryption. Requires advanced tools like Key Tool Plus.

MQB48 & MQB49

Used in newer VW Group MQB platform vehicles — Golf 7+, Tiguan 2017+, Passat B8, A3 8V. Requires specialized MQB48 license.

ID4D (Texas Crypto)

Used in Toyota, Lexus, and some Hyundai/Kia. G-chip (80-bit) is common in Toyota 2010-2020.
